-Neutral Density FILTER(ND4) -

The Indispensable Filter for quality pictures

 

The Neutral Density Filter are like a sun lenses: when the light is so strong, for instance, on the beach or in the snow, the picture usually is sobreexposed, it means, too much illuminated. This can happen when the flash is very hard and you are near the subject to photograph. This filter, also known like Filter ND (Neutral Density), it obtains the correct exhibition without a cromatic aberration, giving a real appearance of a professional picture.

The ND Filter it´s not just helpfull in the occasions before mentioned. When appeasing the illumination, it permets to use a slow shutter speed . There are occasions when we need to use a slow shutter speed to perceive better the scene movement, and this is not possible because of the light excess going into the diaphragm. In this case ND Filter works as a sun lens, which regulate the light entrance giving the possibility to play with others factors,such as depth of field and movement.

Those are some examples, althow the posibilities are unlimeted.

The pictures below were taken trying to give them movement to the action . In the middle picture you can appreciate how the shutter speed OF 30 secons affect to a picture without the filter,the light going in is excessive. Nevertheless in the last picture you can see how the filter avoided the light excess, giving a perfect picture.

To take this picture we used 7 minutes 30 seconds shutter speed. Without the filter we wont see anything at all.

During the day: A bridge with a lot of traffic can destroy our picture.

Nevertheless applying long shutting time you can make the cars disapear. The car movement make a gradually erasing of the cars in the picture. Without the filter the picture would be almost white. But with it we make the perfect picture..
 

ND filters are useful for those 3 situations:

  • Reduce the intensity of light:

    There are times that the combination of the smallest aperture of our camera (eg f8.0) and shutter speed higher (eg, 1 / 2000) are not sufficient to achieve a properly exposed photography. In those cases, a ND filter served to limit the amount of light passing through the lens. It happened using a high ISO.
  • Use a slower shutter speed:       
    Reduce the intensity of light means that we can use a slower shutter speed or a larger diaphragm aperture. A slower shutter speed can produce a blurry image, in this case the photography will reproduce a greater sense of movement.
  •  Use a larger diaphragm aperture: 
    As ND filters reduce the amount of light, you can use its to increase the diaphragm aperture keeping the same shutter speed. So used ND filter to achieve less depth of field without bringing about an overexposed picture.

BE CAREFULL:  To take some of those pictures, your camera need some predetermined features as a shutter timing or an aperture shutter. Those functions are not include in all camera.
